Someone reported a while back that he was the new Royal Editor

Considering that the British monarchy is purely ceremonial, it amazes me that there is a full-time Royal Editor in the first place.

Just because they're ceremonial doesn't mean they're not significant.

They have about as much political significance as the President of Germany, yet German TV doesn't have a full-time editor to cover what is a purely ceremonial head-of-state.

I highly doubt that any Scandinavian broadcaster has a Royal Editor either.

It's not just the monarch's activities that the Royal Editor's role covers, though, is it? Unlike the German president, the Queen is surrounded by an extended family, many of whom enjoy international celebrity status. You're comparing apples with oranges.

And of course you're also completely ignoring the fact that the next few decades are likely to be very significant for the British Royal Family. We have an elderly Queen and Duke of Edinburgh, the succession of Prince Charles and Camilla (whose role will be scrutinised given the legacy of Princess Diana) and eventually the succession of a very popular heir to the throne, Prince William. The decades ahead will be very interesting indeed - so I don't think Chris Ship will be looking for things to fill his time.

Agreed.

And whatever your views on the monarchy, there seems to be a huge appetite for coverage of the Royal Family (both domestic and internationally). It's one of the reasons why just about every royal engagement involving senior royals (Queen, DoE, Charles, Camilla, William, Kate, Harry, George etc) is pretty much always covered by at least one of the UK broadcasters on behalf of the pool.

But I can't help wondering whether Chris will miss the cut and thrust of the daily Westminster grind though?

They certainly aren't going anywhere and as said above, the public have an appetite for news about them!

I don't think there is one anymore. Judging by recent reports on News at Ten, coverage of the Middle East is split between John Irvine, who is based in Dubai, and Rageh Omaar.

ITV News at lunchtime moving to 12.30pm during Cheltenham week (Tue-Fri).

No doubt outrage on twitter that Loose Women has been dropped from the schedule and an article in the Daily Express to follow.
