To do that routinely would run the risk of letting embargoed and other restricted footage be seen on air. In ITV News's case the raw studio camera feeds would contain lots of green!
I’d like to see the ITV Virtual set monitors show one or two real multiviewer outputs - like one showing the cameras, the preview/program and various remotes and graphics coming up.

Newsnet is on Astra 1L. Occasionally you might see a regional truck appear on nearby frequencies but much less so these days as the trucks are able to use data transmission as well as traditional DVB-S2 methods and LiveU is cheaper and quicker than renting satellite time.

Since they moved out of TLS I understand Good Morning Britain live contributions now range from LiveU over 4G data sims, skype, facetime etc so you won't be able to see these.

One thing I have noticed is that Granada Reports has a window wall looking out upon MediaCity, rotating the desk for a newsroom backdrop in the winter months. However, when travelling around the country and seeing other various regional news programmes, their backdrop is a wall with the same size 'windows' but a video in a very bad aspect ratio which leaves most of the backdrop as black bars at the top and bottom. Why can't they just have a video that fills the whole screen rather than a tiny strip?
ITV News Granada Reports updated theirs to include the Mersey Gateway bridge at some point. I'm not aware of any other regions changing anything since they debuted in 2013.

It’s odd isn’t it? They were clearly designed for portrait screens. I’m surprised none of the regions have gone rogue and done that, it wouldn’t be a massive cost in the scheme of things.

The video does fill the whole of the screens!
The only part of the set walls made out of television monitors is that thin panoramic horizontal section. The black bars above and below are acrylic (or something) wall surface - not screens at all.

Doubt the regions even have the option to go rogue now - suspect the sets and contents were all purchased centrally and installed by the same team around the country.
Have always said though they should ditch the two corner screens and have 5 vertical screens as the backdrop instead - a flat panel can replace the screens in the corner, which are only really seen in rare studio wideshots.
I do wonder how practical (and cheap) it would be to role out virtual studios across the country. The Granada set can pull a green curtain across the windows to use an alternative backdrop which they have done for at least one special in the past - think it was the Munich anniversary. I think some regions had experimented with CSO studios before everything went generic too.

Ah, right. It still makes me wonder though, if the money is available for things like HD cameras in some regions, why would they have gone cheap on the set backdrop? If they were going to do that, they may as well just used a high-quality image print of the region or even a generic ITV News backdrop rather than doing a half-done job.

I preusme HD cameras are the only ones available these days, so if they've needed new cameras they've probably been the only options for years. Less about "money being available", and more about neccessity.

To do that routinely would run the risk of letting embargoed and other restricted footage be seen on air. In ITV News's case the raw studio camera feeds would contain lots of green!
Well in cases of green screens and virtual sets I’ve seen on the multiviewers output the rendered image on the camera and that’s also sent to the monitor on the camera. As for embargoed/restricted footage doesn’t ITV use title cards before reports go out and if there are AP/Reuter’s video that’s embargoed it would be small.
