Local crime shows: "Police 6" on Ulster Television used to go out after the evening news, usually on Tuesdays, and in 1993 moved to Sunday evenings and was, soon after, renamed "Crimecall" until it ended in 2001.

Police 6, like Police 5, but one better.

Although actually I don't really know why it was called Police 5, to be honest.

Was it 5 minutes long?

Because it was originally 5 minutes long, or so I always thought

Which region had the longest serving break bumper? Certainly, Tyne Tees had one from 1980, that was reused in 1990, before the 1991 rebrand!

You don't listen, do you? That old animation was. not. used. as. a. break. bumper. in. the. late. 70s!!!

What time(s) did each ITV region air Crimestoppers at? On STV it was either before or after Scotland Today. I saw it once in 1992 on Tyne Tees, but not sure of the timing of the broadcast.

On Tyne Tees it was often shown about 6.30 or 7pm, after the regional news - occasionally about 3.15 too before the mid-afternoon ITN and regional news summary. I’ve also seen it about 10.30 at night too, so generally around the time of a news broadcast.

Both Tyne Tees and YTV showed the short Crimestoppers (generally one minute long) at any time of day.

TTT had a half-hour Crimestoppers programme, once a month, from 1990 to 1992. YTV had something similar but was more patchy in terms of how often they had it on.

HTV used to show Crimestoppers once a day I think. It was generally shown after the 6pm regional news on a Monday and Friday as those nights they showed a regional programme at 6.30pm and Tues-Thurs was Blockbusters. Some afternoons they showed it straight after one of the imported aussie soaps like The Young Doctors about 2.20pm. On weekends its was slotted in around the afternoon regional variation slots. After 1993 they became less frequent and eventually were shown on just a Sunday after the evening regional bulletin (in the days when it was a decent length so losing a minute or so to Crimestoppers didn't matter too much.) Did all regions show Crimestoppers? HTV used to show community messages as well which went out at various times of the week although these tended to be shorter, around 30 seconds or so I think so could have been shown in place of a trailer when needed. Another thing that was shown among various regions was Jobfinder. I think HTV had this overnight at one point. I remember it was a regular show on Central and YTV as well (possibly other regions). YTV had it for quite a well, into the 2000s I think.

YTV’s show was also shown on Tyne Tees until about the early-mid 2000s, by which point it only had a few years left before ending in 2006.

That was an oddity. YTV used Job finder for many years to fill out a 16 hour/week regional quota (in reality they were 10.5 hours which was typical for most areas, but they and Central had Jobfinder as a licence requirement).

Why it was shown on TTT, which had no such licence commitment and had shown Granada Jobfinder during Night Time without opting out for some years, is a mystery. I can understand them just letting it run during the 90s, but instead of Nightscreen was just weird.

Maybe as TTTV and YTV had merged from 1993 they had to show the same programmes apart from local news. All the soaps that were shown regionally from 1993 on both regions had to skip episodes to the region further ahead. This resulted in TTTV skipping around 60 hours of A Country Practice and 2 episodes of Prisoner Cell Block H and YTV skipped around 250 episodes of The Young Doctors. Perhaps as Jobfinder was screened in the middle of the night it didn't bother than too much that the YTV version aired on TTTV as it was just a filler.

Someone mentions CSA, community service announcements. STV had from the late 1980s Box2000, as the PO Box number was 2000. In 2001, it became Box 2001, 2002 etc, but died away several years ago. In fact, I cant remember when STV stopped Box 2xxx. These seemed to air, certainly in STV, at random times. I recall one airing in 1991, before coverage of the Rugby World Cup semi final between Australia and New Zealand (which Australia won 16-6, after a ludicrous decision by the New Zealand captain, with his side 16-3 down with 8 minutes to go, to go for 3 points, rather than run the penalty and attempt to get a try).

Did other regions have a specific time to air CSAs, or was it just random? Also, how many times a day did an ITV region air a CSA? I believe the organisation concerned changed weekly.

Cant speak for other regions but on HTV I think it was random and most would be aired in place of a trailer before or after a programme. I don't think they appeared in tv listings but Crimestoppers did - used to say for example 'Wales at Six followed by HTV Crimestoppers'.

The PSAs as they were called at Tyne Tees were tagged onto the end of random commercial breaks (actually dubbed onto the same tape/cart as the ads). Randomly one might have been played alone as a “filler”. YTV’s Community Link tended to appear mid afternoon around 3.25 or late at night - when YTV took over TTT their PSAs were rebranded as Community Link and appeared in similar slots.

I don't think they were random as such, just that they appeared at various points during the day, I think roughly one every two or three hours on average.

TTT certainly pre-scheduled them (and Crimestoppers), they would be listed on routine sheets (and tagged onto the end of breaks on cart) as PSAs whereas promos and IVC etc would be decided upon nearer the time (and could be changed last minute on the whim of announcers and transmission controllers).

It could have been different at other companies - I never really got the impression that TT was all that bothered about maximising self-promotion, and so did not really go in for optimising use of airtime for promoting the big shows. It was all a bit "whatever fits at the time".

EDIT: snap, Si-Co 😁
