I'm sorry, I've totally lost track of what the argument is here. As far as I know, it began with a discussion about the sports presenter being in the sport studio and, in the grand tradition of this thread, someone suggested it was nice to see a decent studio for a change (ie, the sport studio, as this thread regularly suggests Breakfast should move to). I pointed out they weren't in the sport studio. That's it.


LOL! There was no argument Steve, I'm just convinced they've set up a live position in the sports centre where the Breakfast inserts come from and not 3 floors up where the Newsroom is. As far as we know, there is one DTL live spot on the third floor at the Salford newsroom and it looks nothing like the sports background which is most certainly not CSO.

sports inserts for breakfast are done from the sports centre on the ground floor

It's the second floor, there's 2 DTL positions. One in the pres studio where regional breakfast bulletins come from, the newsreader for Marr on Sunday also uses this. Theres also one at the end of the newsroom. Dan does his weekend football focus chat from this newsroom camera, Politics England also did inserts from there.
They are both live backgrounds.

Guests being interviewed from Salford on Marr, before the pandemic, would often appear at the beginning of the programme in the newsroom position and then move to the NWT breakfast position for the interview once the newsreader has finished.

Still struggle to completely understand how GMB was able to keep theirs but the BBC lost them for nearly six months. Only logical reason I guess is staff being redeployed to cover short falls in the later bulletins or in local radio, which I'm guessing was prioritised, but even then I'm not convinced that would be as justfied now as it was back in April.

ITV regional news probably has lower cost overheads?

This isn't supposed to have been about cost, it's about safety at work (and public service of course), plus unlike ITV the BBC couldn't access the furlough scheme I believe anyway, so there would have been no financial benefit in terms of staff pay anyway, though of course they'll have saved money through not transmitting the breakfast bulletins.


Longer term though I wonder if there will be cost savings through reducing the number of bulletins and I suspect now they've gone without for the best part of six months we may see them dropped on Bank Holidays at least in the future.

Back in March it was to "protect the 6:30pm bulletin" because back then there were fears every other person was going to be off self isolating, and programmes wouldn't be able to air. Talk about stuff both on the BBC and elsewhere staying on air "as long as we can"

That type of thing never really came to pass, and I imagine they are waiting until September to get past the holiday period

Its pretty likely the BBC went more belt and braces on things than other organisations, as being the BBC, you'd expect them to.

I imagine a lot will depend on whether the BBC decide to keep the 9am simulcast of the news channel on BBC One. If I recall correctly the English regions are due to restart their Breakfast bulletins, so it would make sense that any change/restoration of the programme length is unlikely to happen before then.


If the BBC keep BBC News at Nine on BBC One I suggest this structure
09:00-09:30 News
09:30-09:40 Nationwide/Regional News
09:40-09:49 Sportoday
09:50-09:56 Business
