1999 was regional idents wasn't it? I'm sure Tyne Tees had some Lilac ident that year.
2000 was the robin which appreared in promos and some region's idents.
2001 was the very nice ice ident - ruined by lack of regional identity.
2002 *cough*.

Well let's have a look, at least for GMG North regions at Christmas...
1999 - Good idents, 2000 - Poor idents, 2001 - good idents, 2002 - poor idents, 2003 -...........

Granada got......................
1999 Regional idents, the ones which had two sqaures on screen, one with the G, the chevron or TTTV on the left and the one on the right had pictures which kept changing, usually Santa and snow. They also got those freaky Millennium idents.
2000 We got nothing, excpet for a Robin on a couple of trailers, even ITV2 did better that year.
2001 We got the ice ident, the only thing I didn't like was that there was no Granada branding on it.
2002 I don't believe we need to say anymore about this one.
Lets hope for some better ones this year, even if they jazzed up the music, it would sound nice.

Indeed, when designing my 2003 Christmas mock for BBC1, I toyed with incorporating the word "Christmas" for the first time in 13 years. In the end I didn't, but I don't see why it can't be done.
It worked in 1979

Well, I thought they were awful: cutesy and naff. And this from someone who quite likes most of the 'dance and movement' idents (excepting scary Haka, of course).

Apparently the same idents from Christmas 2002 will be shown this year on BBC One.
They were so popular
that they are going to have another airing this year - and so no new idents will be released.

Oh yes, Christmas is all about cute kids running around in strange outfits in the snow.
"The children! Won't somebody think of the children!"
Well, sorry for offending you Neil. IMO they conveyed a more Christmas like atmosphere than the rest.
Anyway, it'll be less of a surprise when Channel 4 re-hash the same ones. It seems people are counting on ITV1 to do something different this year.

Who said you offended me? I'm allowed to disagree without beign offended.
Anyway, just because they were better than the rest at being more like Christmas does not make them good - just less bad than the rest.

But in those days the BBC1 logo didn't have to match that used on the globe, either in colour, font or on-screen position. If you wanted to add "Christmas" to, say, the 2002 ident, you'd have to put it on top of the red box or to the right of it.
Or better still, a performing stylised "Christmas" logotype as the centrepiece!

True, although it did match it - it was a silver bauble on the rotating spindle the globe usually sat on
