Is it actually called ABC
1
in America? I thought it was just ABC, as there's no ABC2 (as far as I know).
I think this is good news, as it gives much more scope to the channel (rather than the previously talked about "Daytime" name). Finally freeview will be getting a new general entertainment channel - I only hope it goes 24 hours sooner rather than later (which would probably mean Top Up TV losing one of its broadcasting slots, but that's their loss).

Even if ABC did have a second channel, they wouldn't call it "ABC 2", a name that's already used by some of its affiliates which are on channel 2 (eg. in Baltimore, Maryland).

I doubt very much that Top Up TV would lose a broadcasting slot as the slots are paid for by the subscribers. More likely to be the case is that Freeview would be happy to lose a shopping channel such as Pricedrop Tv or ideal world so that they can eventually relaunch the service with a list of evenly varied channels. For example with More4 coming on board next year and now ABC1, they wouldn't want people to think it is just shopping and news.
If Top Up TV lose a space for broadcasting, this could risk the very existence of the company as it would fail to attract viewers if channels kept disappearing once a subscription had been paid.
I assume you don't like the idea of Top Up TV Benjy. That is your choice. I have Top Up TV and with the likes of UK Gold and TCM and E4 now available to view Freeview has become more appealing. Sure I realise that Freeview and Top Up are seperate but to have a free-to-view service and the option of a pay service ontop should you wish is fantastic.
However it is welcome news that a new entertainment channel is to be launched on Freeview soon and that in itself is a positive thing.

I do believe ABC1 / Daytime would use the daytime downtime of TCM which is only Topped Up in the evenings...

I also think Top Up TV is great, I really enjoy UKTV Gold, TCM and Boomrang and am quite happy to pay for the service. As for Freeview itself I am looking forward to the likes of More 4 and ABC1.

The way
I
see it is:
More4 will replace Price-Drop.TV because it is on the 3&4 Mux
ABC1 will either timeshare with TCM - which means no ABC1 in Wales - or replace Ideal World on Channel 22

Apparantly, this space will be for ABC 1.
Whether this will stay on LCN 15 or not, no one knows.

No, there's no ABC1 or 2 or anything else in that regard here.
The closest ABC has to a "second channel" is the cable/satellite-only ABC Family (which was Fox Family before that, and CBN Family before that, and even earlier was simply CBN when Pat Robertson first created the channel).
ABC Family runs cartoons during the daytime, and family-friendly fare (basically everything in their stable outside of the Disney content, which is only on Disney Channel & Toon Disney) in the other timeparts. They also run recently aired comedy/family friendly programming from ABC itself (their Tuesday night and Friday night comedies most notably). ABC Family also shares movies with ABC (again, as long as they are outside the "Wonderful World of Disney" franchise that ABC has).
