The BBC has just announced (oddly timed at 9:30pm on a Saturday night) that Rona Fairhead is to be the new Head of the BBC Trust.

BBC News reports:
Quote:
"Rona Fairhead, the former head of the Financial Times Group, is to be the new chairwoman of the BBC Trust. She replaces Lord Patten, who quit in May.

Ms Fairhead, 53, becomes the first woman to chair the BBC Trust.

She was chairwoman and chief executive of the Financial Times Group between 2006 and 2013 as part of a 12-year career with its owner, Pearson."

She has quite an admirable media pedigree, apparently.

Presumably she will resign tomorrow over the Great British Bake Off scandal.

Will this have effect on the planned closure of BBC Three?

I doubt it.

It's not just 'planned closure' anymore. It was no longer just a plan when they announced it.

I guess it is just imminent.

The BBC Trust are yet to approve it, aren't they?

Of course it's a planned closure. They plan to close it.

And it may well have an effect as the BBC Trust still have to make a decision on the matter. If the BBC Trust reject the proposal, the planned closure won't happen.

Oh ok, I was wrong.

I thought that had happened and it was just imminent now.

Anyway, Declan - I hope it does mean it makes a difference to the BBC Three closure.

Yep, sorry - an honest mistake. I was confused - I thought it was no longer just a plan and that it was announced that it will close no matter what.

Sorry about that.

Let's turn our attention back to her taking over, what is her previous work and does any thing hint at her stance on BBC Three?

My personal view, and I presume that like most, is that I hope BBC Trust reject the proposal.

Rona Fairhead has been confirmed in post this afternoon by the CMS committee following a Q&A session at Westminster today.

(and for reference the earliest end of BBC THREE on air has always been stated as late Autumn 2015)
