I didn't watch today but just thought I'd have a quick look now on iPlayer. One of the things that really annoys me is how VD constantly talks about how wonderful the programme is. Let us be the judge please! She constantly, nauseatingly keeps telling us the 'films' are 'beautiful' and we 'will want to share them'. Well actually, I won't. Apparently the the first 'film' today was 'incredible' and the most moving thing VD has ever seen about Alzheimer's. Other 'films' are going to be 'lovely, lovely' apparently. And by the way, they're not films, they're just reports!

I honestly don't understand why the BBC think so highly of VD? She was a local radio presenter who got a job at 5 live and massively punched above her weight. Now there seems to be no getting rid of her and she's sucking away BBC News resources for something watched by as many people as watched a signed repeat of Helicopter Heroes last week, despite huge promotion.

These "films" would have much more of a place on the News Channel if they were packaged into a weekly show, though that said it wouldn't surprise me if they do a "best of" type show to run on the News Channel and BBC World at the weekend.

And really find it odd they're dropping it for the snooker just two weeks into launch. BBC2 only started screening the 10am sessions as they have nothing else to show so surprised they're taking priority over a major new daytime commission.

This programme seems to draw parallels with GMTV/Daybreak/GMB and the issues people here have had with those shows, where they always say they have a full round up of the news but in practice they brush off the actual news as quickly as possible so they can focus on specially made feature reports

Although on the other side of the argument, it isn’t unknown for new programmes to launch with pre-prepared feature news as their main stories, both BBC & ITV News have done this when they’ve had relaunches, generally so they can rehearse the launch ahead of time and can practice showing off new graphics and virtual sequences etc. They’ve also done the same with stuff like ‘NHS Week’ and sending the anchor to report from somewhere else as a feature rather than breaking news. So maybe we should wait to see what the main headlines on this show are next week when the pre-prepared items have possibly run out?

Having said all that none of those relaunches and special weeks of stories would ever have taken place in the middle of an election campaign and the fact the news channel isn’t dominated by the party leaders on the campaign trail is unforgivable really.

I don't think it's fair to liken the editor of the programme to someone from London Live who was adamant that normal news was boring and that it should be hipster and rubbish! Compton has been very good so far as editor of Newsbeat.

You can't compare Newsbeat to a programme which is simulcast on a channel which has an older target audience. Both are different and should be treated accordingly. What we've seen from Compton so far is a poor attempt to put her former presenter's 5 Live show on TV with no regard for the existing audience, while attempting to 'yoof' a time slot which isn't suitable for it.

Going back to VD's interview on Radio 4.

According to Victoria, BBC Two wanted it despite no explanation that BBC Two are basically getting a NC commission for next to nothing.

She also claimed the budget for the show was small, this despite having a large studio and a dedicated slot which replaces rolling news.

Oh and about 100x she kept defending that the format is a 'news' show.

Yes but you've generally stated she is the Vikki Cook of BBC News, which isn't a comparison we can yet make. Whilst there are lots of references to Social Media in the programme, I wouldn't say it's especially 'yoof' orientated, although there is perhaps a female skew. If, in a few weeks/months, the show is unchanged and ratings have not increased, then I think it's more fair to draw in the Cook comparison, as she refused to admit defeat or change, which we can't say of Compton yet.

The editor's background is with youth news. Cook also targeted a young audience with an urban slant who are disenfranchised with news.

Interviews with VD claim that they're targeting an audience who wouldn't normally watch news. There are big crossovers between Compton and Cook. Even after two days, we're seeing at least on the NC side that it doesn't gel while maintaining the usual audience, while the share for BBC2 hasn't moved at all from the usual schedule of repeats for the hard of hearing.

Nonsense Louisa Compton only moved to head up Newsbeat last year as a "safe pair of hands" after the previous boss was demoted after bullying allegations. Her background is 10 years in Five Live with 5 of them being the head of daytime.

Problem with the logo at the start of the program today, just a black version of the paint swirl.

EDIT: The black logo seems to be just on the NC, whereas on BBC Two the animating swirl is fine.

EDIT: All seems to be fixed now.

Ratings for day two, slightly up on BBC Two with the programme doing well,

But the news channel has taking quite a hit

Wednesday 1 April between 0915 and 1100 BBC News average 0.129 Sky News 0.055
Wednesday 8 April between 0915 and 1100 BBC News average 0.071 Sky News 0.113

That may be a one off but its quite a switch

I thought this programme was going to react to breaking news and big speeches just like the News Channel did? Labour making big statements on Trident that could lead to good discussion on VD afterwards yet they've just got a bunch of people saying "isn't crime important?"

A good programme for BBC Two. Not for BBC News.

There has been breaking news for the last 20 minutes on a shooting at Milan tribunal but there still has to be yet any mention of it on the program. Where is this breaking news that Victoria claims in her promo.

Isn't 0.71 higher than 0.129? Confused
