A third BBC1 News flash is on the way - presumably during half time of the France - Wales match

Nothing that couldn't wait till 10pm I'm sure. Ridiculous though - they spend weeks calling for a No Fly Zone, then as soon as the UN declare one, they start flying in it! Wink

Yep - Julia Somerville from the CSO studio. Looks surprisingly clear - I thought that CSO was appalingly bad!

Sophie Raworth was called in this afternoon as Beeb bosses wanted an anchor with gravitas and recognisability to introduce the news report. She had a prior, personal engagement this evening however so could not continue.

As serious as the Libyan situation is, I really think that was a complete and utter waste of time

Well, I suppose if you think about it, the newsflash will have been seen by loads people than would normally see a news update (like the daytime ones) because of the rugby so that's why they will have felt the need to have a farmiliar face on. But I also suppose if Julia did the ones during France v Wales, why couldn't she do it during the other match instead of Sophie? I think for most people she will have still have been considered an anchor with "gravitas and recognisability"

Presumably Julia wasn't around at that point (as we don't know when the BBC 1 presenters get there at weekends) and the BBC would rather have a more senior presenter on than the those who were on the NC and World News today (all four of whom aren't particularly known to the NC audience, let alone BBC 1). For what it's worth, though, I thought Roger Johnson, Owen Thomas, Peter Dobbie and Chris Rogers all covered today's developments well, and it was a very sensible move to simulcast.

Very much so. Julia has been presenting the news on terrestrial television for almost 30 years - everything from the Nine O'Clock News to News at Ten. Quite why the BBC feels the need to drag in Sophie Raworth - with only 14 years national TV experience and far less 'gravitas' than Julia - I'll never understand. I can't stand this current mentality of 'viewers can only understand news if it's delivered by a young, attractive presenter'. There's something to be said for age and experience, especially when news is concerned. Julia was delivering news of Libya, including the Lockerbie bombing, when Sophie Raworth was barely out of school!

I don't think it has anything to do with not wanting to use Julia. In fact Julia presented another News Report at around 8.20. As mentioned, Sophie was probably in on Royal wedding business, and Julia may not have arrived at the newsroom yet.

Granted, but if they were that convinced that Julia was up to the job, why did they not call her in early instead? Are you telling me that if Sophie Raworth had not had some other engagement tonight, they'd still have replaced her with Julia Somerville? Not a chance...
